Here's our
chapter's update for this quarter.
Our chapter has been very busy over the last few months.
Membership now stands at 28 people. We are currently soliciting
volunteers to participate on the A-team (AWAM) at the next PAMA
Olympics. We also helped out the national organization by
contacting last year's AWAM scholarship donators to see if they would
like to contribute again this year.
We have had monthly meetings with last month's meeting including a
speaker from Delta TechOps Tech Sales and Marketing department, Demetra
Daniels. Demetra gave a description of her job as account
manager, and what her department is responsible for at the TOC.
She gave an interesting insight to her career with Delta and the
different job responsibilities she has held over the years with
Delta. This month we had a program on skills necessary in the
workplace which included some interactive testing.
Our chapter once again participated in Delta's annual Girl Scout
day. This was the third year for the event and was very
successful. Here's some information about it from our chapter
member Judy Harrison. Please note it has been edited for brevity.
Seven Delta TechOps people, including AWAM Chapter 2 members,
participated in the 2004 Girl Scout Day on September 18, 2004.
The event is for Girl Scouts in the southeastern region ranging in ages
from 13 through 16 to visit Delta and learn about careers in
aviation. The TechOps team was comprised of Engineers, AMTs, and
analysts. Engineer Cathy Argote, who coordinated the effort for
TechOps, and fellow engineer Kent Horton did a wonderful job of
co-facilitating the initial presentation about technical operations to
the Girl Scouts. The girls were educated on the wide variety of
jobs available just in the maintenance operations side of Delta such as
Engineering, Quality Auditing, AD & FAA Compliance, Engine/Aircraft
Records, Configuration Control, Materiels, Aircraft Maintenance
Technician (aircrafts, engines, components), Insourcing, Outside
Repair, Inspection, etc. A tour of the engine shops, Large Test
Cell, and several repair shops was conducted by AWAM Chapter 2 member
Judy Harrison. The girls were also given a tour of an aircraft
undergoing a heavy maintenance check. According to the Delta
employee, Faye Brown, who organized the entire event, "The Girl Scouts
said it was the best we've had so far. I truly appreciate
everything each of you did individually to make it such a successful
day. We have received some really good feedback from the girls on
how much they learned and enjoyed the day. I thought you might
like to see some of the feedback from the evaluation summary I received
today regarding your career track!" A comment that sums up the
feedback is, "The tour of the hanger and planes were really cool! And
the engine test room was impressive too. Being able to see the repair
of the planes and being able to see the engines being put together and
taken apart."
The Regional WIA conference, being held here in Atlanta, is fast
approaching and our chapter will help with tours of Delta TechOps for
conference attendees. During the conference, we hope to get some
folks together during this conference to prepare for this year's PAMA
Olympics. More to come on this. . ..
Thanks,
Karen L. Malvey
